Char Dham Yatra Opening

The Chardham Yatra 2025 is a sacred pilgrimage to the revered shrines of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal Himalayas, offering spiritual purification and divine connection. This journey, a cornerstone of Hindu devotion, attracts countless pilgrims seeking salvation amidst breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. Knowing the opening and closing dates for 2025 is essential for planning a seamless yatra. Below is an overview, including highlights of this divine expedition.

The Chardham Yatra 2025 season commences with Yamunotri and Gangotri temples opening on Akshaya Tritiya, a Hindu festival symbolizing eternal prosperity. Kedarnath opens with its date fixed during Maha Shivratri, and Badrinath  announced on Basant Panchami (February 2, 2025). These dates, set by temple committees based on the Hindu Panchang, ensure an auspicious start. The season typically closes in late October or early November due to heavy snowfall. Yamunotri, Gangotri, and Kedarnath are expected to close on October/November (Bhai Dooj/Yama Dwitiya), while Badrinath closes on October/November (around Vijay Dashami). During closure, deities are relocated to winter abodes—Yamunotri to Kharsali, Gangotri to Mukhba, Kedarnath to Ukhimath, and Badrinath to Joshimath—for continued worship. Verify final dates closer to the season, as weather or astrological factors may cause slight changes.

Highlights of Chardham Yatra 2025

  • Gangotri: The origin of the holy Ganga, this temple by the Bhagirathi River offers serene rituals and stunning Himalayan views.
  • Kedarnath: A revered Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva at 3,583 meters, accessible via a 16-km trek or helicopter, promising divine blessings amidst rugged peaks.

Monsoons (July-August) bring risks of landslides, so plan for early May or late October for fewer crowds. Mandatory registration opens March 1, 2025, via the Uttarakhand Tourism Portal or counters in Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Dehradun, requiring ID, photos, and medical certificates (especially for ages under 12 or over 65).
